Powerless to Empowered: Why First Responders Run Toward Chaos

Season #2

Why do some people naturally run toward an emergency while others run away? In this episode, two sisters and fellow firefighters dive deep into how their chaotic, large-family childhood conditioned them for a lifetime in the fire service—and why learning to embrace the quiet is their biggest battle yet. What drives a person to choose a life of high-stakes emergency response? In this episode, we break down the invisible threads connecting childhood conditioning, large family dynamics, and a subconscious "addiction to chaos" that leads so many straight to the fire service. As two sisters with a 16-year age gap, we explore our completely different perspectives of growing up with nine siblings, how we both fell into the trap of direct and indirect caretaking, and the pivotal moments—from a horrific childhood shower accident to battles with chronic illness—that reshaped how we view survival. We also tackle the heavy realities of being women in a male-dominated field, structural differences in how men and women are hired ("men for potential, women for what they are capable of"), and how strict religious upbringings taught us to suppress our own needs. Finally, we discuss transitioning out of a trauma-fueled mindset into intentional self-care, boundaries, and finding peace in the stillness of low-call stations
